Commercial AC units are designed to handle large volumes of space. The cooling power is greater, the time to cool is usually shorter, and the blowers are more powerful. Residential AC units, while not as large and powerful as commercial units, nonetheless provide homeowners with something the commercial units don’t offer — individual flexibility.
At the most basic level, residential AC units deal with smaller spaces, and so they have a wider efficiency range. Simple tweaks (like pulling the shades or using floor fans and ceiling fans to better circulate the air) have a greater impact on the overall efficiency of a unit. And a greater efficiency in the home means a more comfortable environment for you and your family.
But there’s more to it than just comfort. Cool, filtered air can provide a measure of relief to asthmatics and allergy sufferers, as well as provide a regulated and reliable environment for houses containing elderly citizens and/or infants, two age groups whose overall health can be significantly impacted by the quality of an indoor environment.
Along with that efficiency, though, comes responsibility. The air filter in your central unit should be replaced every month to keep dust and allergens to an absolute minimum. Regular checkups and inspections are also crucial to ensure smooth running all summer long. Any home air conditioning repair company can perform a basic inspection to make sure your system is ship-shape and solid. But also realize that an older system will inherently have more problems than a newer one. If your system is 10 to 15 years old, the likelihood increases that you’ll need AC coil replacement, AC blower replacement, or even AC motor replacement. An inspection can tell you for sure, as well as keep you up-to-date on technological advances and new regulations (such as the new, “greener” coolant option, R-410A, which can replace the older R-22).
Whether you need basic maintenance or a full inspection, be sure to have it done before the heat sets in. Aim for sometime in the mid-to-late springtime. There’s nothing worse than broken residential AC units when you need them most.
