Your HVAC system is responsible for keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. However, in order to do that, it has to use electricity, which is increasingly expensive. Opening up your monthly power bill can be a shocking experience, but it doesn’t have to be. You can take a few effective steps to prevent heating and cooling loss in your home and reduce those bills by a substantial amount while also increasing your own comfort.
Insulation
Perhaps the most important thing to do is to check your home’s insulation. Bare and thin spots in attic insulation can lead to serious heating and cooling loss throughout the year. Investing in more insulation is pretty affordable, and you’ll be surprised at how much more comfortable your home stays (while reducing your energy consumption at the same time).
Seal Windows
Another area where energy is lost in the home is around your windows. If your windows are not properly sealed, heated or cooled air can escape, while allowing outdoor air in. This forces your HVAC system to constantly work in order to maintain the home’s interior temperature and bumps that power bill up significantly. Have your windows resealed and start saving money. Investing in a set of solid curtains (not translucent) will also help block sunlight and heat from entering the home.
Doors
Like windows, your doors can be sources of heating and cooling loss. In addition, if you have glass doors and regularly keep the interior door open (for the view, to allow more light into the home or for any other reason), consider closing that door to save money and improve your comfort.
As you can see, there are numerous ways that you can slash energy loss within your home, while boosting your personal comfort and saving money.
