Costly AC Repairs

ac coil replacementModern air conditioning was perhaps one of the most important inventions in history. While the first concept of air conditioning was first developed in ancient Egypt, it wasn’t until the early 1900s that the modern electric one was introduced in the U.S.

Once these cooling systems reached the public, they became a craze, and Hollywood even took advantage of people who wanted to get out of the heat. During the Depression, movies were released in the summer specifically to capitalize on audiences that wanted to take advantage of cooled theaters.

Today, residential AC units have become the best way to keep a home cool enough during the summertime.

Over the years, there have been many changes to HVAC systems, such as changing the type of refrigerant from R-22 to R-410A for environmental purposes and creating AC air filters that can be replaced by a homeowner instead of relying on a local air conditioning repair company.

But some things still require the help of professionals. AC air filter replacement is simple enough, but AC coil replacement is much more difficult, and also more costly. In fact, the average American homeowner spends between $500 and $700 on central AC repairs.

Here are a couple of things homeowners can do to keep their AC coils as safe as possible from extensive repairs.

  • Air Filter:
The air filter greatly impacts the functioning of AC coils. The filter is designed to trap dirt and debris that flows through the air ducts so that they don’t circulate in the air within a home. As the filter becomes clogged, the excess dust builds up in the AC unit and attaches to the AC coils. This essentially slows down the efficiency of the coils, which are critical to the cooling process. Neglecting these coils could lead to complete AC coil replacement.
  • Home Care:
Homeowners can do their part in keeping the coils clean by wetting and wiping down outdoor AC coils. They can open the condenser and spray the coils with water from a spray bottle, or a more gentle setting on a garden hose. With proper care for the fins, which can bend easily, excess dirt can be removed to increase the efficiency of the coils without causing damage. This should be done at least once a month during the summertime.

By making an effort to periodically dust off the internal parts of an AC unit, homeowners could save money, and also maximize their unit’s lifespan.
